solar power vs trees

  1. I thought this was going to be about whether you should plant a tree to shade your pool house and put the solar panels elsewhere in your yard.

  2. Thank you.

First, all area to the south and west of pool house on my property, which is just a strip on each side because the pool house is located as far back as possible, is either easement or utility and telecom hookup. Yes I hate underground utilities. Those are the only locations which could, potentially, shade the pool house itself. Now whether this is good or not, a neighbor has a tree on the opposite side of the fence corner just to the southwest of pool house. That tree is small now. If it grows big, it would indeed be an issue for solar panels on the pool house itself, however I could possibly compensate somewhat in one of several ways by positioning solar panel.

The north east faces the house, that is where patio and cold jacuzzi (formerly called hot tub) is going.

The only possible location for tree anywhere in my yard (especially given the existence of pool house itself, which is occupying the only other possible location, and the future patio to be built all along the southwest side where I wouldn't want a tree anyway for being too close to house foundation) is to the north west of pool house. It is also the south west of main house itself, so if future 6kW to 10kW array is to be on house itself, that tree cannot be a tall one.

Noelia has suggested planting a second Mimosa tree, just as in my front yard, to give some shade to the yard for chairs, table, etc. I believe that tree is a Mimosa Rosea, which have maximum height of 20 feet. Mimosa can be invasive in other parts of the country, but here it is limited in its ability to reseed due to hot weather. So I think that is the perfect choice.

It will not significantly shade the house, but for having solar array on roof in future, that is a benefit.
