Single hung max actually 48, consider casement

I was thinking about it wrongly.  The tricky part of single hung window in front of workbench is reaching the window locks on the top of the lower pane.  To be reasonably accessible, those locks should be no more than 25 inches or so above bottom of window as previously estimated.  That means...the window can be no higher than 48 inches.  52 would put the locks into a position very difficult to reach, even for me.

This is why casement type is very popular above kitchen sink.  Also horizontal sliding window is popular there.  NOT single or double hung.

Casement windows are somewhat of a luxury here in San Antonio.  They are not common and lumber stores don't stock any.  They are custom order.  Here the above kitchen sink windows (and bathroom) windows are almost universally small horizontal slider.  But small horizontal slider wouldn't be big enough for my pool house.

A big casement would work if lock is down low (not mid height!).  Having inside screen means that screen actually protects window somewhat from stray tools and parts.  Two common sizes for big casements are 29x47 and 29x59.  59 would put top of window at 98 inches, 10 inches below wall.  Given special order anyway, I'd go for 55.
